Hybrids & Glimpses, 2017, installation view, oils on paper, each 18 x 13 cm, installation 121 X 212 cm
Manifesting as series of paintings, drawings and photographic/ digital works that use abstraction and symbolism, Hybrids & Glimpses is a project that emanates from two strands of enquiry. The first, draws on Freud's archaeology metaphor, which centres on the psychoanalytic process of extracting repressed material from the psyche. The second, uses my knowledge of and practice in energy work, specifically, Zen Shiatsu, Qigong and Chinese Medicine, to think about energy and matter.
The microcosmic and macrocosmic worlds depicted play with scale, and emerge from a layered process of creation and destruction as large to miniature oils on canvas, board and aluminium, works on paper and digital prints. They come from pockets inside a life in flux and are made up of glimpses captured as inscriptions, as failed excercises in impermanence. Born from a place of loss, absence or lack and subconsciously motivated by Freud's death drive towards an originary place that exists between death and life (which I believe all art is), Hybrids & Glimpses explores the nature and meaning of existence.
